Stephen Harper != Prime Minister
Sunday, 1 January 2006
I am dreading the results of the upcoming federal election here in Canada, especially since it is looking more and more as though the Conservatives may win (even if only a minority gov, as now with the Liberals).
Stephen Harper seems too much like Bush – a sock-puppet for special interests – and, much like in the USA, special interests that look to make our society less, rather than more, inclusive. Given half a chance, I am sure the Conservatives will try to reverse the legalisation of gay marriage, and then that of abortions. Regardless of any legal standing he may gain to be called Prime Minister, I will certainly not acknowledge it except in a technical sense.
I have no illusions about the Liberals being saints, to be sure, but I certainly admire their guts in tackling an issue like gay marriage. Their willingness to make Canada a more inclusive society, despite (very likely) some of them having personal reservations about gay marriage, is commendable.
I can only hope that if the Conservatives do win, it will be a minority government, and they will be blocked by the other 3 parties on reversing the gay marriage law. The NDP may help them on some legislation, but I doubt that will be the case for any attempts to reverse gay marriage or abortion laws.
Crossing my fingers until the 24th of this month.
EDIT (6 Feb 06) – A Conservative MINORITY – HAAA-HA!!! and PHEW!!! Bloody Puritans – stop trying to earn Brownie Points with your MYTHICAL DEITY, and try to live for THIS LIFE, the one you would be living if you actually had a PULSE.
